Steps in Re Introducing Orangs Back to a Semi-Wild State
Quarantine
Orangs acquired from smugglers or pets are isolated under the care of a vet for a period of ninety days to one year.
Education
Orangs, with the help of their buddies must now re learn how to climb, open coconuts and build nests
Introduction
After graduating from school, orangs are then allowed to wander back into the forest.
Support
Some orangs return to the feeding station twice a day. Others live off the land from the time of release. Still others return when hurt. One, who had not been seen for over a year, returned to have a painful thorn extracted from her finger.
Why not just return them to the jungle when they finish school?
Efforts have been made to place them back in protected forests without support. Most have failed resulting in deaths of the orangs. An Austalian researcher believes the location of fruiting trees, water and other resources is imprinted in their minds when traveling with mom as kids. Changing their location confuses this early wiring.
Why can’t we hold and cuddle the orangs?
Humans transmit disease to the orangs. Human contact mentally stresses the orangs. Human contact causes a high infant mortality rate. Anytime you see an orang and human together, the chance of the orang surviving through its’ life span markedly decreases. Organizations who show pictures of people and orangs together want your money, period.
